Privacy Policy
Locato ("Locato", "we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices you have when you use the Locato mobile application (the "App").
Locato is a consent-based location-sharing app: you share your location only with people you connect with, and they share theirs with you. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Information You Provide
- A display name / nickname you choose
- An optional profile photo
- The connection code(s) you use to link with family and friends
- Saved places ("Places"/zones) you create for arrival and departure alerts
Locato does not require you to provide your real name, email address, or phone number to use its core features.
1.2 Location Information
- Precise GPS location (fine and coarse) of your device.
- Background location: with your permission, Locato collects your location even when the app is closed or not in use, so it can keep sharing your live location with your connected circle and trigger place (geofence) alerts. While background location is active, an ongoing notification and/or foreground service indicator is shown.
- Location history of your device, so you and the people you have connected with can review recent locations.
You can turn location sharing off at any time, and you can revoke location permission in your device settings.
1.3 Camera and Photos
- Camera: used to scan QR codes for connecting with others and to take a profile photo.
- Photos: used to set a profile picture and to share a photo's location, if you choose to.
1.4 Information Collected Automatically
- Device type, model, and operating system version
- App version, usage statistics, and diagnostic/crash logs
- Battery and connectivity status (to indicate whether your location is current)
- Advertising identifier (e.g., GAID/IDFA where permitted)
- A push notification token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) to deliver alerts
2. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Show your live location to the people you have connected with, and show theirs to you
- Trigger arrival/departure alerts for the places you save
- Provide location history, Emergency SOS, and nearby-places features
- Deliver push notifications
- Operate, maintain, fix, and improve the App
- Display advertising and process optional in-app purchases
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information.
3. How We Share Information
3.1 With People You Connect With
The core purpose of Locato is location sharing. When you connect with another user via a code, your real-time location, recent location history, and arrival/departure alerts may be visible to that user, and theirs to you, for as long as the connection is active. Sharing is mutual and consent-based — only add people who agree to share location with you, and only connect if you consent to share yours. Do not use Locato to track any person without their knowledge and consent.
You can stop sharing or remove a connection at any time in the App.
3.2 With Service Providers
We use trusted third-party services that process data under their own privacy policies:
- Google / Firebase — Cloud Firestore & Storage (to store and sync location, connections, and profile data), Authentication, Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging, Remote Config, Google Maps & Geocoding, and Google Play services — Firebase Privacy and Google Privacy
- Google AdMob (advertising) — Privacy Policy
- Meta / Facebook SDK (app analytics and advertising) — Privacy Policy
- Google Play Billing (in-app purchases) — processed by Google; we do not receive your full payment details.
We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party services and recommend reviewing their policies.
4. Data Retention
We retain your profile, connection, and location-sharing data for as long as your account/connections remain active. Location history is retained for a limited period to power the history feature and is then deleted or aggregated. Diagnostic and analytics data is retained for up to 24 months. You may request deletion of your data at any time (see Section 8).
5. International Data Transfers
Some service providers (e.g., Google, Meta) may process data in countries outside your residence, including the United States. Where required, these providers rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or equivalent safeguards. By using the App, you consent to such transfers.
6. Data Storage and Security
We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure.
7. Children's Privacy
Locato is not intended for children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA, where applicable). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Your Choices and Rights
- Stop sharing: turn off location sharing or remove a connection in-app.
- Permissions: revoke location, camera, or notification permissions in your device settings at any time.
- Access / correction / deletion / portability: request a copy, correction, or deletion of your data by contacting us.
- GDPR (EU/UK/Switzerland): you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and to withdraw consent, and to lodge a complaint with your Data Protection Authority. Our lawful bases are your consent, our legitimate interests in operating and improving the App, and legal compliance.
- CCPA/CPRA (California): you have the rights to know, delete, correct, and to opt out of "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising, and to limit the use of sensitive personal information (precise geolocation). Locato does not sell personal information for money. We may share advertising identifiers with Google AdMob and Meta for interest-based advertising, which may be considered "sharing." To opt out, disable personalized ads in your device settings or contact us.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be highlighted in-app or on our website. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy.
